SIDNEY CENTRAL SCHOOL'S REAL HEROES

On May 17, 2012 two Sidney Central School District staff members were recognized by the American Red Cross at its 3rd Annual American Red Cross Real Heroes Breakfast.  Megan O’Sullivan (K-12 Physical Education Teacher) and Jim Karl (Aquatic Aide and Community Swim Coordinator) were recognized for their response to a pool emergency at Sidney High School.  One afternoon at the beginning of a Sidney High School aquatics class, a student entered the pool and swam to the deep end, but almost immediately began to experience a major seizure.  Instantly recognizing the symptoms, Jim Karl and Megan O’Sullivan put their professional life-saving training into practice by safely removing the student from the water, securing professional assistance and performing appropriate care, ultimately saving the student’s life.

Superintendent Bill Christensen stated “Megan and Jim are true heroes and made the difference that day.  Their training is exceptional, but equally important their execution was professional and flawless.  As a  parent and community member myself, it makes me feel very good that my children, along with all children, are in good hands when they are in the pool and are learning from such remarkable professionals.  Megan and Jim are incredible role models for young children and lead everyday by example.  They are nurturing, supportive, accountable and, most importantly, incredible people that make a difference every day.  We are very proud of them and so pleased to have them on our team.”

Jim Karl made the decision to become an educator after a career in law enforcement.  Currently he is an Aquatic Aide at the Sidney Central School District and also serves as the Community Swim Coordinator.  In addition, he is a Lifeguard Instructor and is a football, basketball, and track coach for Sidney.  He lives just outside the village with his wife Sarah and children Bethany and Collin.  Jim stated, “I enjoy working in the school system where I have the opportunity to watch children reach their full potential.”

Megan O’Sullivan grew up in Utica and earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees at SUNY Plattsburgh.  After graduation she became a Physical Education teacher for the Sidney Central School District.  During the summer she works for the SUNY Oneonta Migrant Youth Program teaching Social Studies and Physical Education.  Throughout the year, Megan teachers CPR and First Aid for the MAC League and coaches modified soccer and softball for Sidney CSD.  But her true passion is teaching: “I love helping others learn how to help themselves.”

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are the school flags being flown at half-staff so often?

Governor Cuomo has implemented a policy whereby the flags on all State buildings are to be lowered to half-staff in honor and tribute to our State's soldiers who are killed in action. He notifies public agencies of the soldier's name and various other details, as well as signifying a specific date for the flag to be lowered. In the future, we will post these notices on the district website to inform residents.
