Kindergarten class gets to experience part of Oregon

As part of a cross-curricular social studies and art project, the kindergarten team sends two child-created paper gingerbread men that get sent around the world.

The gingerbread men are sent by parents to friends and relatives throughout the country, or the world. In return, the recipients are asked to send a postcard, which represents the state or country they live in, back to the classroom.

The postcards are then posted on a bulletin board outside the classroom.

Students in Sally Owen’s class got a much bigger surprise this week as a parcel arrives for the classroom. One of the students’ recipients sent much more than a postcard to show the class some different things about Oregon.

The class unboxed everything on Wednesday and had the chance to see postcards showing the state, a sand dollar, a stone, a package of dried cranberries, a package of yogurt-covered cranberries, and two large sequoia tree pine cones.

The kids had a chance to taste the snacks and to feel the large pine cones before placing a pin in Oregon on their map.
