Vehicle day gives students chance to visualize career choices

The Sidney Elementary School recently held its second vehicle day, which is a way for students to visualize future careers, as well as talk to those in the field.

This also allowed students to explore a variety of careers that use machinery and vehicles for everyday work.

The premise is to give the younger students exposure to a variety of careers so they will be able make informed decisions about their path after high school. Counselors also find that when students have a goal or ambition for the future, they are more likely to express an interest in school.

Vehicle day proved to be a fun way to have a career day, allowing students to connect visually and with information. Many different vehicles were at the transportation center throughout the day. People in those professions stayed and explained what they did and how the vehicles helped. They also demonstrated where applicable.

Vehicles included:
  • An ambulance from Sidney Emergency Services
  • A police cruiser from Sidney Police Department
  • A bus from Sidney Central School
  • A helicopter from LifeNet New York
  • A bucket truck and other work trucks from Asplundh
  • A backhoe and demonstration, featuring students, from DCMO BOCES
  • A bucket truck from NYSEG
  • A dump truck and boom mower from the Town of Sidney highway department
  • A reconstructed Volkswagen bus with Wayne and Debbie Oliver
Students had a good time getting to see the vehicles in motion, and asked many questions throughout. The event was deemed a success and the school has hopes to continue and grow the event.
