Second annual Alumni Career Day a success

Students in grades 7-12 recently had the chance to explore different career fields during the second annual Alumni Career Day.

The event on Friday, November 18 was held in conjunction between the Sidney Central School District and the Sidney Alumni Association.

Fifteen presenters manned tables this year, allowing students to head about career possibilities and to ask questions. Those talking to students were mainly Sidney alumni, though a few other area residents helped as well.

There were a few changes from last year’s event, which originally had just students in grades 9-12. It was expanded this year to included grades 7-8. This year’s career choices, too, were based on a survey taken by those in grades 7-12, allowing the event to focus on the most popular career choices.

Sessions in the upper grades were expanded this year based on feedback. Students in grades 11-12 had three 17-minute sessions; students in grades 9-10 had three 15-minute sessions; and students in grades 7-8 had four 10-minute sessions.

During the event, students picked fields in which they had interest, and learned from a professional in that occupation. After the time limit, they would move on to their next interested field.

The Alumni Career Day encourages students to think about their futures beyond high school, and expose students to positive role models in various occupations.
