Sidney students, superintendent show at County Fair
Thanks in part to a newly added VIP showcase Friday during FFA Day at the Delaware County Fair, Sidney CSD Superintendent Bill Christensen was among some area school leaders who showed a cow.

Christensen, along with Walton CSD Superintendent Roger Clough, Delhi Superintendent Jason Thomson, Walton business administrator Greg Dale, State Senator Fred Akshar, and Raquel Gonzalez, who is the director of policy with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, were aided by local students and FFA members during a special showcase.

Two of the state FFA’s officers were also helping as the state Sentinel, Matt Currie of Homer, and District 4 President Megan Peila of Oxford were on hand.

“It was a great experience and I have a tremendous amount of respect for the work that the staff, parents, and children put into showing these animals,” Dr. Christensen said. “Thanks to (Walton CSD FFA adviser and agriculture teacher Tina) Mrs. James and Mr. Waltz for their continued leadership in ag education and helping create opportunities for all students to be successful.”

Sidney students participated in the junior and senior showmanship classes, which preceded the VIP show.

Students also competed in tree, weed, and crop forage identification contests. They also took part in environmental science, dairy foods, and dairy showmanship. Sidney FFA adviser Jay Waltz said the Sidney contingent placed in the top three in many of these contests, which Michaela Cotton taking first in crop forage, Elijah Williams placing first in environmental science, and Reed Scott taking first in tractor driving on Thursday.
