Eighth grader wins Sidney spelling bee

The Sidney Central School District spelling bee was anything but catastrophic for eighth grader Kori Scott.

She successfully spelled “catastrophic” as her championship word following the 14th round to earn a spot in the regional final on Saturday, March 4 at Oneonta State.

The regional winner advances to the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. from May 28-June 4.

Sidney’s championship lasted six rounds, not including three attempts championship words, between Scott and Kyra Moorhead. Each had chances to advance.

Principal Eben Bullock served as the pronouncer. The judges were teachers Charity Baker, Stephanie Hulbert, Megan Rose, and Jacquelyn Neale.

In all, 24 students participated in this year’s bee, which was for students in grades 6-8.
