New York State Senator James L. Seward visited Sidney Elementary School on Friday to celebrate Agricultural Literacy Week.
Seward visited Laura Slesinsky’s second-grade class to read the book “Before We Eat: from farm to table.” After reading the book, Seward took questions from the students.
“Agriculture remains our state’s number one industry and is especially important to our upstate way of life,” Seward said. “Educating young people on this topic is vital to our future sustainability.”
After reading to second graders, Seward got a tour of the new kindergarten rooms with elementary school Principal Rob Hansen, Kerrie Johnston (assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction and special programs), and Tony Stenta (director of curriculum/school improvement).
“It’s always exciting to see Senator Seward and have the chance to share with him the amazing things we are doing in Sidney to help students achieve both academic and social success,” Hansen said. “Thank you to the Senator for taking time out of his busy schedule to read to our students.”
Agricultural Literacy Week is in its 13th year and helps bring agriculturally themed books and resources into thousands of classrooms and libraries throughout New York State.
