Elementary robotics students compete in demolition derby
Elementary robotics students compete in demolition derbyFifth- and sixth-grade students in Sidney Elementary’s robotics class spent a week preparing for the final project of their choice. In this case, it was a demolition derby.

Students formed teams or alliances and built their systems to withstand the attacks of other robots. During the testing phase, students were able to evaluate their systems to make changes in order to protect their robots.

For two days, the robotic demolition derby kept students on the move as they planned strategies with the hopes of earning more points.

Bonus points were awarded to teams that had completed more assignments than required for the quarter.
During the competition, rounds lasted three minutes. Students earned points by pushing other robots on their backs, or taking parts off other robots. Conversely, teams could lose points by getting flipped over.

In fifth grade, Steven Loewenstein won the competition, outdistancing second place by 130 points.

The sixth-grade competition was closer as Dezmen Crosson and Yousaf Iqbal worked together to earn the victory, winning by 60 points.
