Sidney SCS taking part in Helmet for a Promise
The Sidney Central School District is working to make sure kids are safe when skateboarding, as well as biking or on scooters.

The department has teamed up with the Skateboarding Committee and the Ian Tilmann Foundation to offer free helmets in exchange for a pledge to wear them.

Parents were asked to fill out a form and return it to their child(ren)'s PE teacher. The teacher then measures the child’s head and submits paperwork, ensuring the helmet the child receives is accurately sized.

The program is open to students in K-12.

The helmet is provided free of charge. The Ian Tilmann Foundation donates the helmet and the Skateboarding Committee pays for the shipping and handling.

Founded in 2005 in memory of Ian Tilmann, who died from a brain injury suffered from a skateboarding accident, the non-profit foundation sends helmets as long as there is a promise to wear them while skateboarding.

“The physical education teachers have done a great job promoting this program,” said Megan Rose, the physical education department chair at Sidney. “The department continues to work very hard to help keep our students safe. We are excited to be included in this program and hope to see more of our students practicing safe physical activity – inside and outside of the school.”

As of February 4, Sidney has nearly 140 students who have signed up for the program. This is an ongoing program, so if you would like your child involved, please contact his or her PE teacher.
