Reading Warriors' assembly held for third quarter
The third-quarter assembly for the Reading Warriors was recently held and included a visit from the Ross Park Zoo.

The quarterly assemblies have been based on the Sidney Elementary School’s new reading program, Reading Warriors, which was designed by a committee of staff members wanting to create a fun, interactive, effective, and simple way to encourage student reading. Students are encouraged to read for 30 minutes a day, at least five days per week. If a student does this, they receive incentives throughout the year.

As an addition to the program, there is also Reading Buddies. Once a month, older students read to younger students. This program was created to foster relationships across grade levels, as well as encourage reading at every level.

Each quarter, the assembly focuses on a different theme. Themes have included healthy habits, caring community, writing warriors, and most recently, amazing animals.

At each assembly, the new theme is revealed, and the number of minutes read is reviewed. Sidney Elementary had read more than 1 million minutes by the end of the third quarter.

The assemblies also feature something fun. The first quarter assembly had teachers performing a skit about eating and harvesting fruits and vegetables. The second quarter focused on the roles different community members have. Several professionals came in and talked about how they can help. The third quarter featured the Ross Park Zoomobile, showcasing animals.

The final assembly will be combined with the end-of-year assembly, where it will be announced how many minutes each grade level has read and how many minutes the entire school has read.

During the third-quarter assembly, a “buddy bench” was also presented. This bench will be used during recess for kids who might not know who to play with. They can sit on the bench and other kids will come over and invite them to play.
