Winning mattered at a recent Sidney Federal Credit Union volleyball tournament – and the students of the Sidney CSD are benefitting because of it.
Entry to the tournament included school supplies. And a basket raffle also raised funds that would be donated to the school district chosen by the winning team. The winning team got to choose a district in which SFCU has a branch.
The winning team chose Sidney CSD.
On Thursday morning, three SFCU members dropped off the supplies as well as a check for $686.00.
“At Sidney Federal Credit Union, we strongly believe in supporting our local communities and empowering the youth of today,” said John Jansen, a member solutions agent at the credit union. “We hope to create a positive impact on the educational experiences for all students – who will ultimately be the ones to strengthen and uphold our community in the years to come.”
Jansen, along with Jackie Yeomans, who once was an aide at Sidney CSD, were members of the winning team.
“I had worked at this school district for several years, and I have seen first-hand what the teachers do to provide for the kids, most often out of their own pockets,” said Yeomans, also a member solutions agent. “In an effort to alleviate some of that burden, it was our privilege to give back to the school and to the educators that have done so much to foster a positive environment for the students.”
Makayla Phillips, a training specialist at SFCU and a Sidney CSD graduate, also helped deliver the supplies and check.
“It feels really good to be able to give back to my alma mater,” she said.
The attached photo shows just a sample of the supplies that were collected. Supplies will be delivered to building offices so students who need the supplies can easily access them, Sidney CSD Superintendent Eben Bullock said.
“The Sidney Central School District is grateful to have such a strong partnership with SFCU,” Bullock said. “Our relationship continues to strengthen the greater Sidney community by providing resources and opportunities for students, educating our students on the importance of financial literacy, and always being willing to help support.”
