A summit sponsored by The Heart of New York Teen Institute featuring about 130 students was held at Sidney Central School on Monday.
The Teen Institute program trains and empowers high school-aged youth from across the state to work together to develop action plans – strategies that positively address specific challenges in their schools and communities. The program seeks to reduce the frequency of underage alcohol use, tobacco use, other drug use, and other self-destructive behaviors.
Youth learn through the program to look at challenges not as roadblocks to be feared or ignored, rather as opportunities to be embraced and overcome.
Because of the success this program has had at Sidney, the district was asked to host the inaugural Teen Institute Summit.  The goal of the event was to re-energize regional action plans and celebrate the team’s efforts with an annual summit.
Titled “Return to the Summit,” the day-long event featured interactive activities and action planning. Of the students involved, more than 20 were Sidney students. Activities included M&P Ordinary is Extraordinary, as well as “Eat Breathe Teamwork,” also by M&P Presentations. The end of the day featured a Summit Circuits and Action Planning session.
In total, there were about 130 students, 21 advisers, two Teen Institute volunteers and four staff members.
Fourteen teams were represented, including Sidney, Fabius-Pompey, Groton, Lafayette, Institute of Technology Central at Syracuse, Marathon, Marcellus, Margaretville, Nottingham, Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler, Sherburne-Earlville, Spencer-Van Etten, Tully, and Westvale SDA church. Also, youth staff from Delhi and Baldwinsville attended.
