Sidney athlete to compete at NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational

Sidney CSD seventh grader Isabella Phelps has been selected to compete in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Invitational.

The one-day tournament is scheduled for Friday, January 27 at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12:45 p.m., with wrestling to begin at 1 p.m. All finals (first/third/fifth) are slated to start at 6 p.m.

Phelps, who is 15-4 overall this year, will compete at 107 pounds. She’s 10-1 against girls this year, and 5-3 vs. boys. This season, she won the Horseheads JV tournament and the Oneonta JV girls only tournament. That tournament was a deciding factor of reaching the state invitational.

Four wins are needed to win a state championship. Her opening match is against sophomore Emmie Moore of Penfield. Should she win that match, she will face the winner of junior Hannah McCarley of North Tonawanda and freshman Katie Thibault of Geneva.

Fellow Section Four wrestler Alaina Gumble (senior, Johnson City) is in the opposite bracket. Sherburne-Earlville’s Gabbi Naylor, a freshman, is also in the opposite bracket.
