The Sidney Central School District and the Raymond Corporation have collaborated on the Raymond Welding Skills Developmental Program (RWSDP) to help better prepare students for a welding career.
This year, Raymond provided a unique objective to welding program students – to create a fabricated piece to accompany the Raymond holiday tree display at the Roberson Museum in Binghamton.
The challenge was accepted and Sidney’s students – seven of them – worked together to create a large present. With attention to detail, the group made a life-like box, adorned with Sidney Central School and Raymond on the sides via ornaments.
There were constraints of the challenge, including it not being a tree, it must stand by itself, and it must be transportable via pickup truck or van.
The students followed this step-by-step process to reach the end result:
1. Define the problem
2. Generate concepts
3. Develop a solution
4. Construct and test a prototype
5. Evaluate solution
6. Present final solution
