The Sidney field hockey team raised $1,831 to go toward cancer research during the recent Play for the Cure game.

“We are proud of the girls and the amount they raised for a worthy cause,” assistant coach Ashley Lincoln said.

Before the event, team members were given a donation sheet explaining the game and the cause. They were also challenged to individually raise at least $100. Donations could be made either as a flat fee or fee per goal.

The donations are given to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

Sidney has participated in the event for more than 10 years, and this year is the highest amount the team has raised, coach Christine Race said. Usually, it’s in the range of $250-$500.

Mackenzie Constable, a sophomore, earned top honors on the team by raising $121.50.
“My family has been affected by this disease, so we support fundraising for the cause,” she said. “I think it is pretty cool that we all got this much.”

Mallory Stillman, a sophomore, and Sarah Bessett, a seventh grader, each raised $115.
