Noreen Matthews, a teacher aide at Sidney Elementary School, recently received the Adult Good Samaritan Rescue Real Hero Award.
The award was presented to Matthews during the Mohawk Valley American Red Cross Real Heroes breakfast on March 19 in Utica.
Matthews, who was nominated for the award by school nurse Susan Smith, reacted quickly to a situation that saved a student’s life.
In May 2014, Matthews noticed a second-grade student choking in the elementary cafeteria during lunch. As another person ran to get the school nurse, Matthews quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver on the student, which helped a grape fly out of the student’s mouth.
Her quick response helped save the student’s life, and she was honored for her reaction during the breakfast.
