An indoor camping event was the perfect culiminating activity for Ms. La Bare’s Ancient Greek Mythology Social Studies lesson, as well as for the common core module reading of Percy Jackson and the Olympians – Lightning Thief.

La Bare’s class put on a camp out in Ancient Greece in the classroom. Also invited were students from classes taught by Ms. Slater, Ms. Webster and Mrs. Thom. The students had also worked hard to make Grecian art in Ms. Wunderlich’s art class and those pieces are displayed in the class.

Along with that was a tent pitched in the middle of the classroom, along with making columns, leaves, grape vines and a fake fire, to help the room feel more Grecian
Several activities were done throughout the day with the other classes. Everything started with a role play game with the students, class aide Mr. Sanders and La Bare wearing togas, they acted out each Greek God and used a visual symbol of each. The other classes then had to guess which Greek God was being portrayed.

Following that activity, students broke off into groups and had to match the symbols of the Greek Gods with their names. Then, after making Ancient Greek headdresses, the students went on a scavenger hunt around the building to find pictures of Greek Gods. Each student carried a clipboard with a checklist of each God they needed to find. There was also a map, showing them where to find the pictures. The students had to navigate through the building to find the pictures.

“It was a great success,” said La Bare, a self-contained special education teacher at Sidney. “All of the kids not only had fun, but were learning at the same time.”

Following the scavenger hunt, the students returned to the class to enjoy a cookout lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, mac and cheese, watermelon, chips and dip and s’mores. Lastly, they had the chance to watch the movie, allowing to the students to see what they read in movie form.
