Two top-five finishes at the Adirondack Short Course Championships helped Sidney Central School sixth-grader Sydney Christensen qualify for the Adirondack Zone Team.

Christensen, representing Sidney’s new swim club, competed in nine events over the three-day event at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy from March 14-16. She finished 10th overall out of more than 200 swimmers. She also reached the finals in all nine events she swam in.

“Sydney is a very talented swimmer who works extremely hard,” Sidney coach Uday Mukhlis said. “She continues to get faster and faster and is near the top in the state with swimmers her age. This is a great accomplishment for her and for our new club.”

Christensen’s top finishes were a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2 minutes, 9.68 second) and a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:45.89). These two finishes qualified her for the Adirondack Zone Team, which will be held from March 26-28 in the Eastern Zones Short Course Championship, which includes regional teams from Virginia, Maine, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C., among others.

At the Adirondack Short Course Championships, Christensen also competed in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.

“I am so excited to have an opportunity to represent our new club at Zones,” Christensen said. “When the season started, it was my goal to qualify and I am very happy to make it. It is a great honor to swim with the top swimmers in New York State and I can’t wait to compete against the best on the East Coast.”

Taylor Christensen, a freshman, placed 17th in the 200 butterfly at RPI. She also competed in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle.
