Sidney Central junior Austin Dean placed sixth at this past weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Dean, who competed at 285 pounds, reached the state semifinals before finishing 2-3 for the weekend.

He opened the weekend with back-to-back victories, beating Port Jefferson’s Kyle Fiske, 7-4, before pinning Alden’s Eric Feitshans in 3 minutes, 42 seconds.

Dean then faced Aldred-Almond senior Connor Calkins. In a high-scoring match, Calkins, who went on to win the state championship, squeaked out a 14-13 victory.

In the consolation bracket, Dean again met Fiske, just with a different ending. Fiske won a double-overtime match, 2-1. Dean’s weekend ended in the fifth/sixth place when he lost via disqualification to Schamont’s Marcus Ramundo.

Sidney senior Kai Sabada also competed at the state tournament, finishing 0-2 at 195 pounds. Sabada lost his opening match to Onteora’s Dustin Mackenzie via pin in 58 seconds. He then lost to Schalmont’s Tim Flower by pin in 4:45.
