The Sidney Middle School Student Council held a food drive from Jan. 27-Feb. 7, raising more than 1,800 cans of food.

Proceeds went to the Sidney Food Bank.

A competition was held between homerooms for grades fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. Four homerooms competed in fifth, sixth and seventh, with two homerooms from eighth grade.

The total amount of items raised was 1,836.

Each grade had a winning homeroom, with that class earning a pizza party. The overall winner won a pizza and ice cream party.

Students brought in a variety of food, including tuna fish, cereal, peanut butter, soups, canned vegetables and canned fruit.

The eighth-grade classes excelled with Stephanie Hulbert’s class collected 427 cans, edging Renee Stento’s eighth-grade class, which brought in 390 items.

The top seventh-grade class was Maggie Loney’s homeroom, which raised 227 cans. In sixth grade, Jacquelyn Fisher’s class had 115, and the fifth-grade winner was Lauren Cochardo’s homeroom, which collected 152 items.

Student council co-advisor Paula Dewey said President J.P. Dewey, Vice President Nathan Gorshack, Secretary Adrienne Paternoster and Treasurer Zach Harrington played key roles in the food drive.

“Mrs. Loney and I are very proud of all the students who participated in the food drive,” Paula Dewey said. “We were amazed at how generous people were. This will go a long way to helping our community.”
