Hey Sidney! We have an update for the elementary school after-school enrichment program!
As we gear up for the second session of our after-school program, we've run into a good problem -- students don't want to leave!

We’ve noticed that swimming and cooking have become two of our most popular activities, and many students are asking to stay when families arrive for pick-up.

To help families plan ahead, we’ve included the swimming and cooking schedules by grade level. We hope this helps make pick-up a little easier—and gives your child a chance to enjoy more of what they love!

Session 2 begins Monday, November 10!

Students in Peter Okoniewski's physical science class recently completed research projects on common over-the-counter medications. Students were tasked with researching their selected drug, providing scientific explanations on how they work, and then developing a claim and provide scientific reasoning as to whether their selected drug should remain over-the-counter or be prescription medications. Students presented their findings to the class.

Great work with some interesting facts and opinions!

Sidney Federal Credit Union Financial Literacy Specialists Lilly Whitehead and Sam Harrington recently visited Carin Lee’s personal finance classes to discuss budgeting with students. The students practiced zero-based budgeting using Skittles. Students had to recognize needs and wants, and then make adjustments to their budgets based on unexpected expenses or pay raises.

Thank you to Lilly and Sam for their knowledge and insight! We also want to thank SFCU for the continued partnership with the Sidney Central School District!

Earlier this fall, the second grade took a fun and educational field trip to Covered Bridge Farm in Unadilla. Students took a hayride, explored a corn maze, and learned about taking care of cows. Each student also had the opportunity to pick their own pumpkin to take home.

It was a great day filled with learning, laughers, and fall fun!

The annual FFA Fair was held last week at the Sidney Central School District. Jr/Sr High School students displayed various themes and topics as elementary and Jr/Sr HS classes came out throughout the day to look at and interact with the presenters.

This was once again a wonderful event that allowed students of all ages to interact and work with one another!

Students in Bryan Neubert’s Earth & Science class recently made solar ovens as they learned about how the sun produces energy through nuclear fusion, and how the sun can be used as a clean fuel source. The class also utilized Sidney CSD’s outside learning spaces for this project.

Students learned how harnessing the sun’s energy can help populations of people without access to clean cooking fuel. Students were given certain criteria and constraints to build their ovens. Criteria included doubling the air temperature in the oven, fitting four s’mores in the oven, and to melt the chocolate within 20 minutes.

Additionally, students were tasked with creating a poster to demonstrate their knowledge of the sun’s structure, nuclear fusion, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the social values of using solar energy as a clean fuel source. Students put their posters on display while cooking s’mores in their ovens, and staff members and administrators walked through to view the projects and ask questions.

Quite the delicious lesson!

Elementary students help name Sidney PD’s new K-9

Elementary students at Sidney CSD recently had a special opportunity to take part in naming the new K-9 for the Sidney Police Department. School Resource Officer Jenna Nordberg talked to students about naming the new canine. Students were able to choose from five names – Odin, Hunter, Warrior Chase and Gunner.

Students also had a chance to see the newest four-legged member of the department.

Each class took the time to review their options and cast their votes.

Following the voting, the winning name with 122 votes was Chase! Sidney PD officer Royce Terry will be Chase’s handler.

Students expressed their excitement about being part of this community partnership. It also seemed like no coincidence that the young learners – especially in grades UPK-2) overwhelmingly chose “Chase,” which is a familiar favorite on Paw Patrol!

The Sidney CSD is grateful for the opportunity to connect with our local law enforcement and our school resource officer, and we look forward to following Chase’s adventures in service to our community!

Students in Peter Okoniewski’s physical science class recently held a gallery walk as the culmination of a poster project. Students were tasked with determining what the most cost-effective form of paper towels were to use to clean up spills. The class came up with their own procedures, collected data, and calculated how much it would cost to clean up different spills. That helped determine whether a name brand, bargain brand, or school brown paper towels would be the most efficient cost-wise.

During the gallery walk, students showcased their findings and other classes who came to look were able to ask questions.

Great work!
