Elementary students help name Sidney PD’s new K-9

Elementary students at Sidney CSD recently had a special opportunity to take part in naming the new K-9 for the Sidney Police Department. School Resource Officer Jenna Nordberg talked to students about naming the new canine. Students were able to choose from five names – Odin, Hunter, Warrior Chase and Gunner.

Students also had a chance to see the newest four-legged member of the department.

Each class took the time to review their options and cast their votes.

Following the voting, the winning name with 122 votes was Chase! Sidney PD officer Royce Terry will be Chase’s handler.

Students expressed their excitement about being part of this community partnership. It also seemed like no coincidence that the young learners – especially in grades UPK-2) overwhelmingly chose “Chase,” which is a familiar favorite on Paw Patrol!

The Sidney CSD is grateful for the opportunity to connect with our local law enforcement and our school resource officer, and we look forward to following Chase’s adventures in service to our community!

Students in Peter Okoniewski’s physical science class recently held a gallery walk as the culmination of a poster project. Students were tasked with determining what the most cost-effective form of paper towels were to use to clean up spills. The class came up with their own procedures, collected data, and calculated how much it would cost to clean up different spills. That helped determine whether a name brand, bargain brand, or school brown paper towels would be the most efficient cost-wise.

During the gallery walk, students showcased their findings and other classes who came to look were able to ask questions.

Great work!

Starting the first week of school, students who are current with their classwork, demonstrate appropriate behavior, and communicate an interest in furthering their study in Robotics/STEM studies have been welcomed to come to Mrs. Vaughan's class and work on independent study projects when they have available time.

Students who are participating have shown advanced levels of commitment to a task and there are currently three teams working on projects.

The Robotic Elephant was the first project started this year and Nyah Stanton-Helms, Ava French and Kennelly Snell work on it several times a week, and often multiple times in a day. This allows them to work on their daily goal of completed steps to the build.

In order to program the elephant, the students have been studying elephant movement, geographical markers that identify the type of elephant they are building, and various items of interest that will be included in the slide show that they are developing to help them with their presentation. The team's goal is to be able to present this project during the open house on October 9.

Other projects that have been started include the Lego Mini-Fig dispenser and the Lego Robotic Arm. These two projects are in the beginning stages.

The purpose of this program is to encourage students to prioritize time to complete classwork, build additional skills in problem solving, time management and teamwork while accessing available resources to learn things that match their interests in an environment that will provide appropriate challenges.

Students in Brandon Payne’s Algebra 1 and Calculus classes were caught honing their Algebra 1 skills on vertical whiteboards around the room. Students identified the skill level most appropriate for them (mild, medium, or spicy), identified patterns in each problem, and used those patterns to move up to the next level.

Teachers in each class provided feedback to each student to make sure they were advancing to the next level.

Great work all around!
