Sidney Central School District’s SSADD (Sidney Students Against Destructive Decisions) club recently received a donation for $3,500 from the Unatego Science Foundation. The money will go toward the club’s efforts to educate students about distractive drive (the week before prom), as well as the SSADD Bigs/Littles mentoring program. There are also plans for Save A Life Tour in April, as well as more activities around a safe prom.

Thank you to the Unatego Science Foundation for this donation!

At the beginning of December, Stephanie Straub’s high school painting class visted each of the three UPK classrooms to work with the students on holiday crafts.

During the crafting sessions, the high school students were tasked with engaging in conversation with the UPK students to get to know them better, and ultimately to leave with a list of 2-3 favorite things for each UPK student.

High school students then took their lists back to class and created a painting for each of the UPK students based on those lists – and what they shared during the visits. The painting class, which consists of 12 students in grades 10-12, ended up creating 40 paintings (one for each UPK student).

Before break, the painting class returned to the UPK classrooms to deliver their paintings as a small gift before Christmas. UPK students enjoyed the paintings and made cards fr the high schoolers to thank them for the artwork.

What a great job!

Seventh graders in Maryssa Wilson’s Agriculture 7 class recently learned about the history of hot chocolate. Some of what they learned included how and why it changed from a bitter and cold drink to a warm and sweet drink.

Students then had the opportunity to put their recipe reading skills to the test and find creative hot chocolate recipes. Some included peanut butter, orange zest, and frozen.

Tasty!

Retired Sidney CSD music teacher Gregg Norris stopped by the district Wednesday to drop off gift cards courtesy of the Gateway Alliance Church. The cards will be given to students/families within our community this holiday season.

Gateway Alliance Church approached the district at the beginning of the year to see how it could support the school and students. After speaking with district officials, the church purchased gift cards for businesses in the area. Since then, the church has been able to purchase 40 cards at stores such as Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and Walmart. School counselors will collaborate on the distribution of the cards, as needed.

Norris said Gateway has been excited to partner with the district, and look forward to an ongoing relationship moving forward.

Thank you Gateway for supporting our students and families!

Receiving the gift cards on behalf of Sidney CSD is Director of Curriculum/School Improvement Tony Stenta.
