On Thursday, the United States earned gold in women's hockey, a 2-1 overtime victory over rival Canada.
It's safe to say many second graders from Sidney were cheering them on.
Before the break, the second graders were getting excited for the games, including a recent Scholastic News feature highlighting the Olympics.
That high-interest reading turned into a powerful and authentic learning experience.
Just before the break, students had the chance to welcome the grandmother of Olympic hockey player Haley Winn.
Mrs. Winn shared Haley’s inspiring journey with our students, explaining how determination, resilience, and a deep love for the game helped her granddaughter rise to compete among the very best women’s hockey players in the country. Haley began skating at just two years old and dreamed of playing in the Olympics one day, a goal she has now achieved as a defenseman for Team USA.
Haley scored her first Olympic goal in a 5-0 victory over Switzerland.
Mrs. Winn reminded our students that big dreams begin with small steps; hard work, perseverance, and believing in yourself. Her visit beautifully connected to our district’s ongoing focus on social-emotional learning, reinforcing themes of determination, goal setting, and resilience.Sidney CSD is incredibly grateful to Mrs. Winn for spending time with our second graders and for sharing such a meaningful story.
