Congratulations to Sidney CSD student Jaiylee Adams, who designed the poster for the upcoming Upstate Renaissance Faire, which will be held August 23-24 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich.

The Faire teamed with Stephanie Straub’s Advertising Design class for the second straight year, giving students a chance to collaborate in a real-world environment. Heather Baker, an occupational therapist at Sidney, owns the Faire.

Jaiylee was presented tickets to the Faire for her winning design, which has been being used to promote the event.

Great job!

At the end of the year, Dale Beckwith’s physical education classes took on th challenge of a triathlon on campus. The course was two laps in the pool (100 yards), and then bike up West Main Street to Circle Drive, and back to the school (two miles), followed by the third event – a lap around the outside of Alumni Field and back to the finish line (one mile).

Three of the students (Josh McNamara, Connor van der Sommen, and Parker Harrington) went beyond the normal triathlon and did an “ironman” version where they each did the course twice.

Toward the end of the school year, earth science students had the chance to go on a field trip to Taughannock Falls State Park in Trumansburg. During the trip, hiked the gorge and made several stops to study the geology and natural history of the area.

The gorge offered a way for students to apply and review geology concepts that were taught in the classroom, while also enjoying the day in the Finger Lakes region.

The hike ended at the base of Taughannock Falls, where students observed the 215-foot-high waterfall. Taughannock is the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains.

For a group of Sidney CSD students, this past spring break featured the trip of a lifetime as they traveled and learned about Costa Rica.

The students had many experiences as they traveled throughout the country along with Sidney CSD Spanish teacher and chaperone Mary Rajner-Morris.

Activities included the following:

- Pineapple tour
- Coffee tour
- Chocolate tour (learned how they grow, process of picking etc., as well as sampling)
- Zip-lining over the canopy of the rain forest
- Hiked up and down the more than 500 steps at La Fortuna Waterfall
- Hiked Santa Helena Cloud Forest and Manuel Antonio State Park
- White-water rafting
- Swimming in the naturally heated volcano springs
- Kayaked around Arenal Volcano
- Took a tram ride over a rain forest
- A cultural dance night with audience participation (a few Sidney students took part)
- Eating authentic casada food, including fruits like guayabana and cas, and fresh native pineapple
- Saw the flora and fauna of Costa Rica, including sloths, howler monkeys, bloue morpho butterflies, toucans, iguanas, scarlet macaws, snakes, and crocodiles

The culturally enriched trip included authentic food, dance, wildlife, and the opportunities to use the language, currency, and shop where natives shop.

Toward the end of the school year, representatives from Sidney Federal Credit Union helped put on a real-world event for seniors.

The event centered on seniors having to react to real-world events to understand budgets. With a chosen career and salary, students had to go to different tables and understand different variables of what happens with their money, as well as what kind of bills and expenses they can expect.

The end result was showing the students that they often will have to make tough decisions and understand the big difference between wants and needs.

Thank you to SFCU for continuing to partner with the Sidney Central School District to help prepare students for their futures!

The eighth-grade team (Mrs. Stento, Ms. Harclerode, Ms. Howard, and Mr. Sims) were trained in Project-Based Learning this year. Students recently had the culmination of a project, which was a social studies/ELA project about people who are making “good trouble.” Students researched a topic of their choice and created a pop-up museum exhibit. And thanks to a wonderful day of weather, they were able to utilize one of Sidney’s new outdoor learning spaces for the museum. All eighth-grade students were able to visit the exhibits and ask questions. Other projects this year included a Spanish/ELA project, as well as a math/social studies project. Great job! #SidneyPRIDE #SidneySabers #SidneyCSD
