Students in Peter Okoniewski's physical science class recently completed research projects on common over-the-counter medications. Students were tasked with researching their selected drug, providing scientific explanations on how they work, and then developing a claim and provide scientific reasoning as to whether their selected drug should remain over-the-counter or be prescription medications. Students presented their findings to the class.

Great work with some interesting facts and opinions!

Sidney Federal Credit Union Financial Literacy Specialists Lilly Whitehead and Sam Harrington recently visited Carin Lee’s personal finance classes to discuss budgeting with students. The students practiced zero-based budgeting using Skittles. Students had to recognize needs and wants, and then make adjustments to their budgets based on unexpected expenses or pay raises.

Thank you to Lilly and Sam for their knowledge and insight! We also want to thank SFCU for the continued partnership with the Sidney Central School District!

Students in Bryan Neubert’s Earth & Science class recently made solar ovens as they learned about how the sun produces energy through nuclear fusion, and how the sun can be used as a clean fuel source. The class also utilized Sidney CSD’s outside learning spaces for this project.

Students learned how harnessing the sun’s energy can help populations of people without access to clean cooking fuel. Students were given certain criteria and constraints to build their ovens. Criteria included doubling the air temperature in the oven, fitting four s’mores in the oven, and to melt the chocolate within 20 minutes.

Additionally, students were tasked with creating a poster to demonstrate their knowledge of the sun’s structure, nuclear fusion, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the social values of using solar energy as a clean fuel source. Students put their posters on display while cooking s’mores in their ovens, and staff members and administrators walked through to view the projects and ask questions.

Quite the delicious lesson!

Students in Peter Okoniewski’s physical science class recently held a gallery walk as the culmination of a poster project. Students were tasked with determining what the most cost-effective form of paper towels were to use to clean up spills. The class came up with their own procedures, collected data, and calculated how much it would cost to clean up different spills. That helped determine whether a name brand, bargain brand, or school brown paper towels would be the most efficient cost-wise.

During the gallery walk, students showcased their findings and other classes who came to look were able to ask questions.

Great work!
