The Unatego Science Foundation made a donation to the Sidney CSD high school Flood Monitoring Project to help with the replacement of the Sidney river gauge.
With the donation and remaining funds from a previous grant, directors were able to purchase a new compact constant flow bubbler system, which will record river water levels in real time. This station is a critical piece of the project’s entire system located throughout the upper Susquehanna watershed.
Additional funding is still being sought for the repair or replacement of a stream gauge located on Carrs Creek, which is upstream from Sidney Center.
The Flood Monitoring Project started in 2007 by Sidney teachers through a grant by State Farm Insurance. The project was in response to the devastating floods in June 2006. Eight satellite-linked precipitation and stream gauge instruments were installed and continue to be maintained by Sidney CSD teachers and students. The system proved to be vital in predicting river levels and help guide evacuations during the flood in September 2011.
Installation of the new gauge is slated for this summer.
High school science teachers will offer an after-school enrichment program during the 2022-23 school year that will focus on flood monitoring and prediction, as well as water quality in the upper Susquehanna basin. Interested students can contact teachers Rich Townsend or Bryan Neubert for details.
Winners of the SSADD scholarship are pictured. From left: Jr/Sr High School Principal Maggie McNamara, Lacie Merideth, Hannah Hasselbarth, and SSADD adviser Jon Yurka.
The Unatego Science Foundation also donated to the SSADD (Sidney Students Against Destructive Decisions) scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to seniors who are leaders of SSADD and have empowered students, have made a positive change in their school and demonstrate “WarriorPRIDE” both in and out of school. Congratulations to Lacey Merideth and Hannah Hasselbarth for earning the scholarship!
The Sidney CSD is thankful to the Unatego Science Foundation for the donations to the district.
