Sidney CSD names valedictorian and salutatorian
Earlier this spring the Sidney Central School District held an assembly to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2018.
Victoria Prouty is the valedictorian, and Nikolas Petrus is the salutatorian. Each will speak during the annual graduation ceremony, which is scheduled for June 23.
More about each honoree is below.
Prouty is a well-rounded student who has challenged herself to take the most rigorous courses Sidney has to offer, as well as balance clubs, sports, and community involvement.
She has dedicated her coursework to math, sciences, and visual arts. She has been highly involved in clubs throughout high school, including several leadership roles. Prouty has been involved with art club, Interact, and the varsity letter club. She is the secretary of the Spanish club, and a co-leader of Sidney Students Against Destructive Decisions, and is vice president of the National Honor Society, and executive student council.
She has also competed in soccer, indoor track, and outdoor track. She has been a scholar athlete in all three sports.
Academically, she has been on the Superintendent’s List throughout high school. Prouty has also received the outstanding drawing and outstanding painting awards, and has participated in the Jericho Student Showcase. Last year, she was selected, and attended, Girls State. Prouty received the RIT Computing Medal Award, RPI Medal Award, and Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award.  She also was selected as Sidney’s DAR Good Citizen award winner.
In her spare time, Prouty has been a dog caretaker, a peer tutor, and has worked on the Upper Watershed Project.
Prouty is the daughter of Andrew and Linda Prouty, and plans to attend Colgate University this fall.
Petrus is a hard-working student who possesses great leadership abilities. He exhibits a strong sense of confidence without being boastful. A role model to his peers, he is dependable to set the best example.
A rigorous course load has been something he has had throughout high school, including taking the Project Lead the Way pathway.
Moving to Sidney from Endicott in 2013, he has been an asset to the school. Last summer, he attended RYLA, a weeklong leadership conference. He also was nominated for Boys State. Last year, he also received the Clarkson University Achievement Award and the RIT Computing Medal.
A member of SSADD and the Ski Club, Petrus serves as the president of the National Honor Society. He’s also gifted athletically, and participates in football, indoor track, and outdoor track. He’s been honored as a scholar athlete in each sport.
Petrus is the son of Cheryl Petrus, and the late George Petrus. This fall, he will attend Northeastern University.
