Vehicle Day gives SES students a chance to visualize careers
The Sidney Elementary School held a Vehicle Day in May, an event intended to provide elementary students with the opportunity to explore a variety of careers that use machinery and vehicles for everyday work.

The idea is to expose students to as many careers as possible so they will be able to make an informed decision about their path after high school. Counselors also find that when students have a goal or ambition for their future, they are more likely to express an interest in school.

Vehicle Day was a fun way to have a career day, allowing students to visualize some career paths. Vehicles from different career paths lined the circle. People in those professions stayed and explained what they did, discussing the vehicles and the skills, knowledge, and qualifications needed to run the machinery.

Vehicles included:
  • A backhoe from DCMO BOCES
  • A loader and dump truck from the Town of Sidney Department of Transportation
  • A roller from the Village of Sidney Department of Public Works
  • An ambulance and fire truck from Masonville
  • A Delaware County Sheriff’s car and a Sidney police car
  • A bucket truck and wood chipper from Asplundh
  • A hearse from Lander’s Funeral Home
  • A skid steer from Broome Bituminous Products
The students were in awe of the vehicles and excited to get out and learn about them. Many interesting and good questions were asked by the students, who were actively engaged in the conversation.

Overall, the event was a huge success and counselors received positive feedback from students, teachers, and the vehicle operators. The school hopes to host similar events in the future.
